Axis RTSP URL Format

Use the following RTSP URL format to connect your Axis camera to SmartCam Alerts.

# Specific video source (multi-sensor cameras)

Replace username and password with your Axis camera credentials, and IP with the camera's local IP address. Axis cameras do not use a port number in the URL by default (port 554 is implied). You can append parameters to control resolution, compression, and video source.

How do I find my Axis camera's IP address?

Use the AXIS IP Utility or AXIS Device Manager tool (available from axis.com) to scan your network for Axis devices. These tools will display the IP address, model, and serial number of each camera found. You can also check your router's DHCP client list or use the camera's link-local address printed on its label.

What are the default credentials for Axis cameras?

Axis cameras running AXIS OS 7.10 or later require you to create a root password during first-time setup. There is no default password. The default username is "root". On older firmware, the default credentials were root/pass, but this has been removed on all current firmware for security.

Why does the Axis RTSP URL not include a port number?

Axis cameras use the standard RTSP port 554 by default, which is the implied port when none is specified in the URL. You can explicitly include it (rtsp://user:pass@IP:554/axis-media/media.amp) if needed. If your Axis camera uses a non-standard port, include that port number in the URL.

Can I control stream quality through the RTSP URL?

Yes. Axis cameras support URL parameters to control stream quality. You can add ?resolution=1280x720 to set a specific resolution, or ?compression=30 to control JPEG compression (0-100, lower is better quality). For SmartCam Alerts, a 720p resolution with moderate compression provides a good balance of quality and bandwidth.

Does SmartCam Alerts replace AXIS Camera Station?

SmartCam Alerts is not a replacement for AXIS Camera Station or other VMS platforms. It is a complementary tool that adds AI-powered alert capabilities to your existing Axis setup. You can continue using AXIS Camera Station for recording and live view while SmartCam provides intelligent detection and notifications.

Can I connect multiple Axis cameras?

Yes. The free tier supports one camera. The Pro plan supports up to 5 cameras, and the Business plan supports unlimited cameras. Each camera needs its own RTSP URL entered in the SmartCam Bridge.
